Alumni Golfers Take to the Links

As the Saturday morning fog lifted, spirited alumni and friends gathered to renew acquaintances and enjoy the camaraderie of other golfers in the first annual Brentwood Alumni Golf Scramble. Fifty-two players representing fifteen alumni classes assembled in 4-person teams to challenge the delicately sculpted fairways of Pevely Farms in the newest activity over this year’s 3rd weekend in September celebrations.

Carts were neatly tagged with players’ names and aligned in formation for the destined starting hole. Golfers anxiously gathered around carts while others took to the practice range for some last minute strokes before play. Promptly at 8:00 a.m., course official Ryan Veninega reviewed scramble rules and led the shotgun start

Each foursome battled the hazards and bounds of play in 18 holes of spectacular scenery with a masterful strategy of selecting their best ball for each shot. Players traversed the hills of carefully carved fairways, placing shot after shot with varying skill. Scores were recorded with birdies and humbling bogeys, but at the end of the round it was evident that the enjoyment and festivities of an informal clubhouse gathering overshadowed the humility and triumph of any team score. Good shots were recapped in great detail with others tempered by a consoling sip of beverage and an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The scramble was capped off with an awards celebration and drawings for attendance prizes. The foursome of Roy Richter, Jim Roberts, Kurt Rohr and Tom Gammon added to the enjoyment of their class reunion weekend with an 8 under par to take home the golden eagle first place trophy. Women’s and men’s longest drive honors went to Jean Anton and Don Burris. Women’s and men’s closest-to-the-pin competition was won by Ellen Hellwege and Bob Peat. Each took home an eagle trophy for their respective award.

All golfers departed Pevely Farms with new and renewed friendships and another great weekend of Brentwood memories.

A special thanks is given to volunteers, Judi Peckham and Peg Smith for their contribution and work preparing 52 gift bags, and Kurt Niehoff, Don Ungerman and Linda Dollar for their assistance capturing photo memories for all.
